Step 1: Start With a Plan
Begin by gathering the essentials: the exam date, format (multiple choice, essay, practical), the topics covered, and how marks are weighted. Knowing what's actually being tested lets you focus effort where it counts instead of studying everything equally.
Count back from the exam date and divide the topics across the available days, leaving the last day or two for review rather than new material.
Step 2: Study With Active Recall
Rereading notes feels productive but is one of the least effective ways to prepare. Active recall — trying to retrieve information from memory — is far more powerful. Practical ways to do it include:
- Closing your notes and writing down everything you remember about a topic.
- Making and testing yourself with flashcards (question on one side, answer on the other).
- Turning headings into questions and answering them aloud.
Tip: The struggle to recall something is exactly what strengthens the memory. A little difficulty is a good sign.
Step 3: Space Your Revision
Instead of one long session per topic, revisit each topic several times across days, with gaps in between. This spaced repetition takes advantage of how memory consolidates over time. Reviewing a topic just as you're starting to forget it produces the strongest long-term retention.
A simple approach: review new material the same day, again after two days, then again after a week.
Step 4: Practice Under Exam Conditions
Past papers and practice questions are some of the most valuable tools available. They show you the question style, reveal gaps in your knowledge, and build familiarity that reduces anxiety. Where possible, do at least one practice run timed and without notes, then mark it honestly to see where to focus next.
Step 5: Manage the Final Days
In the last day or two, shift from learning new material to consolidating what you know. Review summaries, revisit flagged weak spots, and prepare practical things like your materials and route. Prioritize sleep — a rested brain recalls and reasons far better than a tired one that crammed all night.
